Kang Yatze 2

Overview

Kang Yatse II lies to the south east of Leh located at the end of Markha Valley, on the top of Nimaling plateau. This peak is often climbed for its relatively easy terrain and no technalities involved. This six thousander is another jewel peak, when compared to the famous StokKangri. The route goes up the northern side of the mountain, and then on the western ridge to the summit.. The area has some wildlife, one can spot marmot, blue sheep, snow cocks, lammergeyer, etc. Gorgeous and breath-taking views under the infinite blue sky makes this climb one of the most coveted ones for all mountain lovers. On a clear sunny day, one can see K2, Broadpeak, Nun-Kun massif and Gasherbrum massif in the distant horizon.

Brief Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive at Leh

Flying over miles and miles of heavily snowed mountains will tell you just why its impossible to reach Ladakh by road in the winters. The moment you land at the Leh airport, one of the highest airports in the world, you will feel the fresh and crisp air, and a drastic drop in the temperature. The town has just begun shedding off the thick winter slumber and is slowly coming to life. Taking a stroll through the Leh market, you will find that very few shops and eateries in the town are open for business; but if required, some last minute-shopping for the trek can be done here. The chill in the air wil erve only as a preview of the temperatures during this winter trek. The night is spent in a cozy guest house.

Day 2 : Acclimatization

Enjoy the cultural and natural beauty of Leh. This can be considered as a day to get familiar with the town and also acclimatize to the weather. Lah is culturally a rich place. There are dozens of monasteries and ancient temples that you can go around. They are located in and around the town. Therefore you would be getting enough time to go around the place in a day. Visit the monasteries at Shey and Thiksey. Shey Gompa is situated on a small hill 10 miles south of Leh and was once the residence of the royal family. It was constructed by the first king of Ladakh, Lhachen Palgyigon, and was the seat of power of the pre-Tibetan kings. Thiksey Gompa is located 15 miles from Leh. It is a very imposing monastery and one of the finest example of Ladakhi architecture of any type. The 12 storey building contains numerous Stupas, Statues, Thangkas and wall paintings as well as a large pillar engraved with the Buddha's teachings. The main prayer hall has a 50 feet high seated Buddha figure.

Day 4: Drive to Chilling from Leh and then trek to Skiu

The approach to this gem begins in Chilling and a trek through the Markha Valley, passing by the villages of Skiu, Markha and Hankar. These villages are some of the historical villages, not only of Ladakh, but also of India. A part of the ancient Silk Route and also the Indus Valley Civilization. The fertile land is further turned into a rich agricultural valley by the sheer determination and hard work of the dwelling locals. On this approach march to the peak of Kang Yatse, we do come across few local villagers and talking to them gives an enlightening perspective to your thought process. We follow the well worn path to the village of Skaya. From here it is a short walk to the lush green campsite at Skiu. The village of Skiu is at only 9,900ft, and the Markha Valley here is narrow, so the temperatures can soar. We camp at Skiu, and at dusk it is worth climbing back up the valley to where the Skiu Nala meets the Markha river. Here there is a small monastery cared for by an old nun who comes every evening to light the candles at the altar of 'Chamba', the future Buddha.

Day 5: Skiu to Markha trek

From Skiu, follow a good path on the right bank of Markha where one can find great vegetation. The trail crosses the Markha river at various points, and passes winter settlements that contain Lhatos (religious shrines for local deities) and Mani walls (stones inscribed with Buddhist prayers). During peak season a number of tented teahouses will be open for refreshments. Markha (3800m) is the largest village in the valley, consisting of around 20 houses, an old monastery and a ruined fort.

Day 6: Markha to Tho-Chung-Tse trek

The Markha valley trail continues past old stone-mills, a ruined castle and the auspicious monastery of Techa, which perches upon a cliff that looms above Markha. The path then intersects the river several times before cutting through the last hamlets in the valley. After leaving the village of Umlung, We get to view mighty Mt. Kang Yatse II (6200m) which will stay in sight until one crosses Kongmaru La. After the lunch break in the village of Hangkar (the last one in the valley) continue onward to the lovely green pasture of Thachungste and camp overnight.

Day 7: Trek from Tho-Chung-Tse to base camp of KangYatse II, atop Nimaling plateau

Starting the trek from Thochungtse, we climb a mountain hump straight ahead of us. At that altitude, it does take some time, but once done, enjoy up-close views of Kang Yatse II. A huge massif, overwhelming us with its presence. Also, the very thought that we will be approaching the to the base of it further adds to our spirit. After a hour from Thochungtse, we reach a small lake where we rest and watch the reflection of Kang Yatse II on the water surface. Its from here, the route splits and one goes to Kang Yatse II base camp and the other one descends to Nimaling. We take a right and head to the base camp of Kang Yatse II. It takes us about 2 hours from here to reach the base camp.

Day 8: Trek from Base camp to Advanced base camp

Today you start trekking from Base camp at 16404 ft to Advanced base camp at 19029 ft, and this takes you nearly 5 hours. The rest of the day shall be spent acclimatizing with the high altitude and low temperature, and also preparing oneself for the BIG day ahead.

Day 9: Summit Day and trek to Nimaling

The final push, beginning at 2 am, will be both physically and mentally challenging. But once atop the summit, with the surrounding, awe-inspiring scenery of Tibet, the Zanskar and the mighty Karakoram ranges, all of our numbing pains will melt away in a warm glow of success! After spending an hour on the top, we shall descend to Base Camp. From Base Camp, we shall make our way further down to camp at Nimaling. The rest of the day shall be spent leisurely and celebrating our success of summiting.

Day 10: Trek from Nimaling to ShangSumdo via Kongmarula

Today one will cross to the north of the Markha, climbing to the top of the highest of the three passes, the 5,306m Kongmaru La, with its wonderful views from the top. There are snow peaks in every direction and on a clear day the giants of Karakoram, including K2, can be seen on the north-western horizon. The trail descends to the Martselang valley, following the Martselang stream to the village of Sumdo. The descent is quite steep, but gradually levels out as one enters Shang Gorge, with its fascinating rock formations.

Day 11: Drive from ShangSumdo to Leh

From ShangSumdo, our vehicle shall pick you and reach Leh. You will have a day to relax and enjoy the flavors of Leh.
