Following are some safety precautions for traveling in Sikkim:

Carry traveler's cheques as an alternative of hauling huge amount of cash. You can exchange these cheques at various money exchangers.

Keep all your essential documents and valuables in the deposit box of your hotel.

Don't ever leave your personal belongings unattended.

Prefer traveling in groups rather than alone.

Dare not to bring drugs or any illegal stuff to India, as it is a crime and the culpable will be treated severely.

Sikkim lies on the borderline; consequently many areas are restricted from people. Don't try to bribe or take some prohibited action, in order to enter.

While visiting monasteries, respect the cultural tradition of state. Remove your shoes outside and try not to wear offensive clothes.

Winter Clothes: It is mind numbingly cold on the peak, so pack appropriately. Some tips:

Instead of bulky jackets, try to include many layers of clothing. I.e. a thin sweater, a body warmer ( I can not stress on how important this is ), a windcheater ( You can use these individually when it is not that cold, e.g. at Darjeeling, etc), etc.

Invest in a good pair of gloves.

Carry plenty of socks( Cotton/Woollen ones).

To play in the snow, you don't need to carry any gear, as you can always rent it all at the base. It is okay if you want to carry your own, but it is bulky, and honestly, the rest of the place is not that cold.

Medicines: Carry your first aid kid. the air is very thin on the top, so if you are asthmatic/ have breathing problems, make sure you carry appropriate medicines. The roads are tricky, and if you are not used to it, so something to combat the motion sickness, and to stop vomiting would be preferable. Other essentials like pain killers, antibiotics, etc. should be included. Women should carry pads, or whatever they use, as a precaution.

      Other Clothes:

Carry enough inners to last without washing. It is very cold there, and even if you manage to wash, it won't dry. Carry a minimum of a pair for a day, especially socks, as they tend to get soiled fast.

Carry scarf/ muffler, ear muffs, etc.

If you are going to be travelling by train, and are unable to procure an AC ticket, please carry enough blankets. It gets very cold at night.

      Food :

If you are not used to North- Eastern food, or are not open to trying out new cuisines, do pack some dry food items like Biscuits/ Cookies, as it might be difficult to get perfect Indian food for you. That said, please do try the specialties here.

      Documents Needed:

Carry photocopies of your identity proof, passport size photographs, and essential travel contact book (a physical book, not on phone). At many places, you will be asked to take permits, so you will need all those.

      Camera

Do carry a good camera, we lost ours in the beginning of the trip, and I can not tell you how beautiful the scenery was, and how I itched to capture it into something better than the phone.
