STOK KANGRI

Overview of Stok Kangri Trek

Stok Kangri trek is one of the most beautiful as well as challenging treks in Ladakh that requires a lot of dedication and training before attempting the same as Stok Kangri is at 21,100 ft height. Stok Kangri is located in the Southern part of Leh. This trek has gained a lot of fame in the past few years as this trek has been attempted by many people from around the globe since it became well-known among the crowd. Many treks happen in Ladakh, but the Stok Kangri trek gives heavenly views throughout the trail and the summit is such a destination it is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience that shouldn’t be missed by any adventurer. This summit can be reached in 5-6 days of dedication and a period of overcoming the obstacles that are worth the adventure. This description clearly explains that a trekker who is trying to attempt the Stok Kangri summit should have a prior experience of one or two treks of at least 16000 ft and above as the trails of Stok Kangri get high in its altitude rapidly; thus, to prevent altitude sickness, one requires to possess the above-mentioned criteria and regular physical activities are must. The Stok Kangri trek gives an adventurer to have a glimpse of the second-highest peak of Earth, K2 at a distance, if lucky enough. The barren valley of Ladakh, which is surrounded by deserted moraines offers magnificent views of a perfect landscape in all the ways while reaching the Stok Kangri peak. The peak allows the trekker to have a picturesque view of the Karakoram Range, Zanskar Valley, and the Indus Valley that compliments each other and during the trek, the climbers get to experience a 360-degree view of Saser Kangri too.
Stok Kangri trek can be done between May and mid-October, as during that time the atmosphere in Ladakh remains very pleasant with the temperature ranging from 20 degrees to 30 degrees during the daytime and 10 degrees to 20 degrees during the night hours.

Brief Itinerary of Stop Kangri Trek
DAY 1: Arrival at Leh- time to acclimatize

The glamour of the view that one gets at the summit which comes at 20,500 ft, is an unmatched expedition that needs proper acclimatization right after arriving at Leh. There are certain mandatory checklists that the govt. has been made for keeping in mind the health hazards as you arrive at an altitude as high as 11,480 feet. One among them is the 48 hours of acclimatization period which restricts the travellers from going to higher altitude areas like Khardung La pass, Pangong Lake, and beyond. So, once after arrival, the scenic beauty of Leh can be admired by the explorer by visiting the nearby walkable destinations and can be gradually acclimatized. You get the feeling of entering the majestic beauty of the Northern Himalayas right through your window-seat of the airplane, and finally, you reach the land of high passes. Thereafter, your adventure is taken care of by Geographic Tours. The flights to Leh are scheduled in a way that everyone reaches the airport by the early noon hours. The temperature at the Leh airport is usually pleasant during this time ranging from 20 degrees to 30 degrees which can be easily bear up with. Our representative will welcome you at the Leh airport and transfer you to the designated hotel. Day 1 is solely dedicated to taking rest and getting acclimatized to the climatic conditions at high altitudes.
In the evening hours a trek-briefing session will be arranged by Geographic Tours to make you aware of all the ‘do’s and don’ts’ during the trekking period. You can take a stroll at the local Leh market in the evening hours where you can grab some trek essentials by choosing from a variety of options available at different stores. Overnight stay at the hotel!
It is highly recommended to have adequate water and proper food during the day and sleep early on day 1 as it would help your body get acclimatized easily.

DAY 2: Acclimatization Day followed by a customizable sightseeing

On day two we can arrange your short trip to Sangam, the confluence of the rivers Indus and Zanskar, which can be covered at a return distance of 75 km from the city that might take up to 3-4 hours, as you have a few adventurous deals on your way like the world’s highest bungee jumping at Tsogtsi village, or river rafting at Zanskar. The irresistible beauty of Magnetic hills and the surroundings on your way to Sangam and a visit to Gurdwara Pathar Sahib will keep you happily engaged throughout the day. Overnight stay at the hotel!
You are advised to keep on having enough water and maintain your food habits according to the plans shared and arranged by the guides during the briefing.

DAY 3: Drive from Leh to Stok village (45 mins) and then trek to Chang Ma (13087 ft.)

And the most awaited day of the trip comes here: we start towards our destination post breakfast at the hotel. A drive from Leh to Stok Village, a drive of 45-50 minutes from the city, is the nearest road access to Stok Kangri. After deboarding at Stok Village, we shall start for our first campsite at Chang Ma which is at an altitude of 13087 ft. This trail will require an easy preliminary-level walk to the first campsite which might take around 4-5 hours. As the dive starts from Leh, you would go through many exotic and beautiful sceneries around you. The drive to the Stok village is adventurous and full of natural beauty and lush green surroundings. Overnight stay at the campsite!

DAY 4: Chang Ma (13087 ft.) to Mankorma (14200 ft.)

As per the briefing on the Stok Kangri Trek, we suggest a slow and gradual increase in getting to the next level of altitude as we keep in priority the health and steadiness of the trekker. Hence, Day 4 is planned for a hike in the altitude from 13087 ft. to 14200 ft. which is a trek from Chang Ma to Mankorma. Reaching the campsite at Mankorma takes around 5 to 6 hours. On this trail, the trekkers get familiar with the fact of Ladakh being called ‘The Cold Desert’. Overnight stay at the campsite!

DAY 5: Mankorma (14200 ft.) to Stok Kangri Base camp (16300 ft.)

The Day 5 trek takes you to the Stok Kangri base camp. The trek starts from the campsite at Mankorma after breakfast. Stok Kangri base camp is located at an altitude of 16300 ft, and it takes around 4 to 5 hours to reach the exotic grassy land at the base camp. After reaching the base camp, you can take a scenic walk to the upper regions around the campsite to enjoy the majestic view of different mountain peaks like Gulab Kangri, Parcha Kangri, and many others. Overnight stay at the campsite!

DAY 6: Reserved Rest Day

You are advised to take sufficient rest on this day to be prepared for the onward journey that follows on the next day, and also it is mandatory to get acclimatized as you have arrived at an altitude of 16300 ft. Getting acclimatized on this day is mandatory as in the upcoming days of the trek a drastic change in the climatic conditions as well as altitude, which might result in mild breathlessness. To prevent such inconveniences, we will take guidance from our team leaders and get ourselves inclined to adhere to the process. The day will be spent getting familiar with the landscapes of the valley around the base camp to accomplish the trek. A briefing will be done by the trek leader and the guide to provide necessary information regarding the onward journey and the challenges that might arise while ascending the Stok Kangri peak. Overnight stay at the campsite will be arranged in a way that you are secured in a high-efficient tent along with the sleeping bag and the necessary clothing that could provide enough warmth to acclimatize to the low temperature.

DAY 7: Stock Kangri Base camp(16300 ft.) to Stok Kangri summit (20187 ft.) and back to base camp

This day brings the real day for the expedition as a ride in the altitude from 16,300 ft to 20,800 ft is covered as we reach our final destination, i.e., Stok Kangri peak, followed by descending to 16,300 ft, as we get back to the base camp on the same day. The trek to the summit starts early in the morning after a proper breakfast at the base camp as the to-and-fro journey to the base camp after completing the summit takes around 9-10 hours and this duration can even get extended for another 2-3 hours for the slow trekkers. With the scenic beauty of the glaciers moving into steep slopes followed by the Stok Kangri Summit Ridge, the view from the peak feels extremely enthralling and exciting.
We finally did it! You came with a dream in your eyes, and you are living the dream. How beautiful is the view that can only be experienced and captured by your thirsty eyes! Reaching here was not an easy task for a trekker; it takes a lot of physical strength, and mental stability,y and one needs to have sustainable willpower to face multiple challenges for reaching the summit. But after all, you did it!
After getting enough feeling of royalty at the summit, it is time to get back to the base camp once again. Overnight stay at the campsite with celebrations in heart and a satisfactory sleep after the big day.

Day 8: Stok Kangri Base Camp to Stok Village to Leh

This day is the final day of descending from the beautiful trails at the high altitudes of the trek to Leh. Like the beauty of the mountain never ends, and the thirst of the trekker to explore that beauty can never be quenched, the downhill journey keeps on providing jaw-dropping views of the mountain range to the adventurer. The descending journey could be tricky and difficult at times, and you need to be cautious on every step. The route remains the same as we need to first get back to the Stok Village, which might take around 6-7 hours from the base camp. Our representatives with the vehicles will be waiting for us at the Stok Village, and from there we will start our two-hour drive to Leh City.
