Both these places are so beautiful that people get awe-struck when they see the nature around them stretched for miles together.

Overview

Chadar Trek, one the most spectacular and majestic voyage, is filled with series of unforgettable adventures. It is a trek over the frozen Zanskar river, a journey that a person will remember for his lifetime. The idea alone of walking over a frozen river in one of the most beautiful places in the world sends chills down one's spine. It is a dream come true for any adventurist.

Brief Itinearary
Day 01: Reach the Capital and tune-up

Once you fly to Ladakh, you can see the snow-capped mountains from the flight itself. Roads are totally held up during this time as the temperature goes down during winters and it gets almost impossible to commute through road services. On reaching Leh, one eventually gets tuned up with the environment around. After checking into your hotel rooms, later one can take a look and walk through the hustle and the bustle of what looks like a very busy market. Even in winter time, you'll find the shops open for different purposes and if in case you have missed something from the trekking kit, you can easily buy anything you want for the trek.

Day 02: Reach Tilad Do From Chilling

This is where the real journey begins from. As soon as the morning sun hits the city, one has to move out of his hotel, go towards the village of Nimu through the Indus. Here the Indus River mingles with the Zanskar, which is actually how this mesmerizing journey begins. There are also some awe-inspiring moments too during the drive as the road descends towards right moving into River Valley. Once reaching here, one has to step its foot over the CHADAR in order to make his way towards the camping destination. The feeling of walking over the Chadar is second to none and is one of the most spine-tingling experience one can encounter in a lifetime. Once you reach the camping site, you can climb the mountains to take a nice, perfect landscaped view of the Chadar. At night you are given warm sleeping bags to have a sound sleep inside the pitched tents on the banks of the River.

Day 03: Tilad Do -Shingra Koma

As soon as its dawn, the trekkers are supposed to move out of their tents which gets quite difficult at times. And as person freshens up, he's served with a cup of hot tea. Starting up, a person needs to cover about 10-12 km a day to reach Shingra Koma. For reaching there one needs to walk over the magnificent Chadar which on one hand is an amazing experience but on the other hand is quite difficult as well. So, therefore, its necessary to have locals with you, who will let you know where exactly the feet should be placed to mark yourself safe during the trek. On the way, you are being served with some hot soups and instant noodles. It's better to keep oneself hydrated and take a good intake of liquid. Walking past Shingra Koma you move into Gyalpo which is your campsite for the night, while all trekkers look forward to moving towards Tibb Cave the next day.

Day 04: Shingra Koma-Tibb Cave

Starting the day with the very important morning meals, one needs to cover up around another 10 km while the day ends. High cliffs all around the area keep away the sun to let in the warmth and because of which the thick layer of ice is formed and gets in good solid shape which is the best as far as the trekking is concerned. This part marks the witnessing of many big and small caves including the famous Frozen Waterfall too. The story surrounding the beginning of the Frozen Waterfall is infamous to this day. It is said that some decades ago the locals were going through some water crises and they pleaded to Tibetans for it. They were handed over a box and told to open it up after reaching their village. So curiosity encircled them that made them open the box and to their utter surprise two fishes moved out of the box and took the shape of a huge waterfall. On reaching Tibb, there happens to be a cave having some porters, who generously welcome all visitors.

Day 05: Return Journey

This is the day to return from where we had actually started. One has to move all the way from Naerak to Medical Cave. While returning back it becomes almost impossible to notice the Chadar, which has acquired a different shape by now due to the changing temperatures. During your way back you may perhaps meet the locals wearing traditional clothes, the students off to their schools after the winter vacations, and maybe the monks coming from the monasteries, hiking. You will definitely feel the generosity and kindness through their eyes which makes the journey a lot better than just any sight-seeing.

Day 06: Tibb Cave-Shingra Koma

On this day you need to gear up and move back to those high cliff mountains. You may get fortunate enough if there happens to be a snow leopard around as there are many of them. During recent years they have actually moved to higher altitudes due to human interventions. Still, the footprints of foxes, snow leopards, and ibex give you a sense of much deeper nature around.

Day 07: March from Shingra Koma to Tilad Do and Ride to Leh

This is the last day at Chadar, with the frozen ice around. And the last time to take a glimpse of this eye-captivating place. It's time to bid adieu to this adventurous journey. On arriving at Tilad Do, commute a road service to reach back to the tourist resort and once again sleep in the warm and cozy bed. What an Adventure!

Day 08: Return back

As the voyage gets over it definitely gives a sense of how the locals are surviving on daily basis through such hardships and cold climate, which we actually find quite adventurous. And thus with warmth in our hearts and the journey in our minds, we leave with ultimate contentment, joy, and memories to cherish forever. Happily and blissfully.

Chadar trek the Frozen River Trek begins from the small village of Chilling from where the Zanskar River begins to freeze. The ice can be as dangerous at times as it can be safe during others. One needs to figure out the safe paths over the precarious sheet and must always be aware of the ice conditions below the feet. The trekkers can choose to camp in the caves along the banks like the locals or set up tents where the ice is the most stable. The setting is close to twenty degrees below freezing point and decreases further after sundown as well. Warm and layered clothes are recommended as is being on the move as much as possible. These help invariably in keeping the body warm and prevent cold sores and also keep the blood from freezing.

It is always recommended to be aware of the ice conditions at all times. There are several factors to consider ensuring a safe journey. Most of these factors involve the conditions of the ice and the footing choices of the trekker. The precautions include:

The trekker must be aware of the ice sheet conditions.

There may be cracks in the ice which should be avoided.

Finding places with a coating of snow is the best place to walk normally.

Slippery ice can be found on several sections as well and should be walked on with utmost care.

Cracks may suddenly appear under one’s feet and it is required to run to more solid footing immediately.

The ice is not a trekker’s friend and one should always respect it and be aware of the conditions at all times especially while choosing the camping spot.

Trekking gear should be brought from home as there are not many places available at Leh during the winter where supplies can be bought. Food that can be preserved and made quickly such as instant noodles is an excellent addition. One should always have enough before starting off as it is recommended to be moving for the better part of the day in order to keep warm as well as keeping the journey in momentum. Ice picks, trekking boots, several layers of extra warm clothing are a compulsion in such conditions. Tents are recommended but optional as one can easily camp in caves like the locals who journey across the river. However, being a non-local, that idea may not be advisable and carrying tents is always commendable.
