STOK KANGRI

Overview

Ladakh is bestowed with many fascinating places. One such place is the Stok Kangri. This infamous trek has gained fame in recent years. Every year people from different places, throughout the world, come together for the journey of Stok Kangri. Trekkers, especially from European countries, tend to have an inclination towards Ladakh, as the place is endowed with some great trekking adventures. Leh being the Capital city of Ladakh, is at an altitude of 11,400 ft and Stok Kangri at 21,100 ft respectively.
Initiate the Journey :
The journey for Stok Kangri starts from the home place to Leh Airport and further to the comfort of the hotel. As soon as you reach Leh, you quickly gel up with the surroundings and the generous people around. The trek starts from Leh to Chang-ma via Stok Village.From Chang-ma move towards Mankorma and from there to the Base Camp, which is at an estimated altitude of 16,300ft.The trekkers have to precisely move towards the Stok Kangri, halting at an altitude of 20,100ft. Imagine that!

Brief Itinerary
Day 01: Reach Leh

The best option to get to Leh is via air. All major airlines provide flight services from Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi to Leh. Flights to Leh are scheduled to reach before noon or latest by 3pm. The average temperature in Leh stays around the 10 degree C mark, and during winters it can drop down to a bone chilling -20 degrees C or even lower. The air has a distinct freshness and crispiness in it and you will feel like breathing pure air. Take a stroll through the Leh market, there are various shops selling many different kind of stuff. Go to bed early as next day you will have to be ready for the acclimatization day, necessary for the trek.

Day 2:- Leh (Acclimatization day)

Enjoy the cultural and natural beauty of Leh. This can be considered as a day to get familiar with the town and also acclimatize to the weather. Lah is culturally a rich place. There are dozens of monasteries and ancient temples that you can go around. They are located in and around the town. Therefore you would be getting enough time to go around the place in a day.

Day 3 :- Drive from Leh to Stok village (45 mins) and then trek to Chang Ma (13087 ft.)

The real journey begins from Chang Ma situated near the Stok Village. One has to b This is a day when you would enjoy a great drive and have an enjoyable trekking experience. The day starts with a drive to Stok village. At the start of the drive from Leh, you would go through many exotic and beautiful scenes. The drive to the Stok village is an adventurous one and if full of natural beauty and lush green trees. The day 3 is however the day when you trek 3-4 hours to Chang Ma (13087 ft.)

Day 04: Chang Ma (13087 ft.) - Mankorma (14200 ft.)

After getting up in the morning, one's eagerness to visit the stock kangri is clearly visible. A person has to move from Chang Ma moving to an altitude of 14,200 ft at once and during the whole day, one gets familiar with the fact of Ladakh being called The Cold Desert. The day ends with the overnight stay in the tents once again.

Day 5 :- Mankorma (14200 ft.) to Stok Kangri Base camp (16300 ft.)

A few hours trek takes you up to the base camp. This exotic base camp is an exotic place. It lies in a grassy area. During the day time, you can walk to the upper areas of the campsite and enjoy majestic views of the surroundings. There are some beautiful peaks like Gulab Kangri, Parcha Kangri and many others. You can also relax yourself in the base camp to make sure that the group is ready for the next days trek. You would get time to acclimatize to the weather. This is much necessary because in the coming days, you would find a dramatic change of climate and altitude , and might experience breathlessness. The overnight stay, would again be arranged in tents and make sure that you have enough warm clothes for bracing the low temperatures.

Day 06: Training day+ Rest day

The day includes resting and training for the upcoming expedition that is going to come up next day. During the day, a person gets familiar with the landscape of Ladakh so that the trek gets efficiently accomplished. The trek Leader and the guide will make you well versed with the challenges that you might face while trekking. A person has to even trek on the sinking snow which may be difficult for the beginners. One gets ample amount of time to take rest and gear up for the expedition for the following day. As the Sun sets, the day ends with the stay in the tents similar to the previous nights. By this time you are going to be knowledgeable enough with the climate and the landscape.

Day 07: Stok Kangri Base camp (16300 ft.) - Stok Kangri (20080 ft.) back to base camp.

This new day marks the real excursion for the trekkers. Rising from 16,300ft to 20,800ft i.e Stok Kangri (the specified destination) in itself feels like an achievement. The Journey starts early in the morning as the trek comprises of 9-10 hours and these hours may even get added up with 2-3 hours more for a slow trekker. With the view of the glaciers moving into steep slopes followed by the Summit Ridge, Stok Kangri feels quite enthralling and exciting. This trek does not specifically include physical strength only but also the mental strength. One should get enough prepared for this kind of trekking and keep the willpower going until the destination is attained. The space at this level would be large, wide and an open area giving a feeling of being amongst royalties. The overnight stay, as usual, takes place in tents and one will definitely get a sound sleep after the day's travel.

Day 08: Stok Kangri Base camp - Leh

This Day would be the ultimate day of your fantastic trekking experience. The trek which included high altitude trekking mountaineering and expedition would finally come to an end after this day. But before you end the day, you would see a lot of snow clad beauty and memorable view of mountain ranges. The joy of Ladakh trekking can be rejuvenated from this spot. As the day rises, you would have to start coming back from Base camp to Leh. The trek back could be difficult and you need to perform care and precision. On the same day, after you reach Leh, you would also have to cover up to Stok Village on your feet. Stok village is the final stopping point of trekking. From Stok village to Leh, you would have to take a drive. The drive may make you nostalgic of all the fun that you had while trekking the mountains in the last nine days.

Day 09: Departure Day

Deaprture from Leh with lots of Memories.

    · The climber must be fit and have sufficient stamina to cover 5 km of distance in 45minutes without a stress.
